GTA VI: the best alternative to Red Dead Redemption 3 arrives this fall
While Rockstar stays silent on RDR3
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) set a bar that nothing has really touched since: an enormous Western open world, a honor system that remembered your every choice, and Arthur Morgan. So the question fans keep asking is understandable — where is Red Dead Redemption 3? As of summer 2026, the answer is: nowhere announced. Rockstar has made no official statement, and analysts put the earliest realistic window at 2028-2030, without any confirmation (La Crème Du Gaming). Meanwhile, the studio is pouring everything into Grand Theft Auto VI — which is precisely why the argument is now making the rounds: the best credible alternative to RDR3 arrives this fall.
The alternative lands November 19
GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S, with preorders open since June 25. Rockstar presents it as the biggest map it has ever created — larger and denser than Red Dead Redemption 2 — set in the fictional state of Leonida, the GTA version of Florida (La Crème Du Gaming). Like RDR2, it runs on Rockstar's in-house RAGE engine and promises a continuous playground without visible loading, taking players from the streets of Vice City to swamps, beaches and countryside roads. For a Red Dead player, the pitch is simple: the sensation of a coherent "second world", transposed into contemporary America.
What RDR2 fans get in GTA VI
The immersion is where the comparison gets interesting. Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, told GamesRadar that GTA VI pushes NPC interactions "much further than Red Dead Redemption 2": pedestrians react when you spy on them, flee a robbery you are setting up, and comment on your outfit or your weapons — backed by more than 600,000 dedicated animations (GamesRadar). The game also introduces a criminal profile that tracks your actions, an evolution of RDR2's honor gauge: petting a dog and provoking a stranger will not leave the same trace on your reputation (La Crème Du Gaming). Add the playable duo of Jason and Lucia, more tactical gunfights, and a mountain of side activities — races, sports, exploration — and you get the kind of solo AAA experience many have been missing since RDR2.
A question of expectations
Objectively, the choice is not exactly wide open. Red Dead Redemption 3 does not exist yet, and GTA VI will be the next "big" Rockstar game for years to come, which makes it the only serious alternative for a huge narrative open-world action-adventure on current-gen consoles (La Crème Du Gaming). The caveat is obvious: if what you love is the Western atmosphere, you will have to accept the change of scenery. But if what made RDR2 special was the coherence of the world, systems that respond to each other, and the feeling of inhabiting a living universe, GTA VI looks like the natural stopgap — the official synopsis promises an easy score gone wrong, a criminal conspiracy across Leonida, and two protagonists chasing a fresh start (Rockstar Newswire).
Verdict
This is an editorial argument as much as a news story, but it rests on solid facts: RDR3 is unconfirmed, GTA VI launches November 19, 2026, and its design clearly builds on what Red Dead Redemption 2 achieved (GamesRadar). Until Rockstar says otherwise about a third Red Dead, GTA VI is the closest thing to a new Rockstar open world — and for a growing number of fans, that is reason enough. GTA VI News will keep covering both sides of the story.
